1st April 1754, The inn known locally as the sign of the coach and horses was dimly lit. There was noise and chatter amongst the patrons that feasted and drank there. Lots of characters, some I wouldn’t want to meet down a dark alley, least not during the 18th century and so close to the notorious fleet street of London.
Elizabeth Solomon was not sitting alone, but tucked away in the corner with Hannah Brockhouse chatting and eating a meal that consisted of Beef. They both downed a pot of beer and spoke about the days events. The execution of highwayman Samuel Dean at Tyburn. This was not any execution either, Sam Dean was a close companion of Elizabeth’s husband Daniel Solomon, and her husband was distraught over the death of his friend.
Dean met his end just before 9am that morning, it was a Monday and two carts of condemned men made their way from Newgate Prison to Tyburn, Sam was in the second cart with a William Wilson and John Arnold. In total six men met their end. They prayed fervently and behaved well but unhappy and melancholy. They were off cause about to meet their maker.
Sam was indicted of highway robbery, against Richard Parham, of which he assaulted and stole one silver pocket watch.
That morning Elizabeth and her husband Daniel watched as he hanged.
But the night was not over, as the evening grew late, and the sun had set, just as the night did, the story grew darker.
